UNITAR Hiroshima will be launching its seventh annual courseWomen’s Leadership in Tsunami-based Disaster Risk Reduction, focusing on building resilience and enhancing security of the region through the inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) approach. 

Participants will gain knowledge in DRR, international agreements and frameworks (including Sendai Framework, Sustainable Development Goals, Climate Change), Gender Responsive DRR, Multi-stakeholder Coalition in DRR, Community Based DRR, etc. and finally to develop an “inclusive country DRR Plan” that is contextualized towards their community needs. 

The programme targets 100 women living in or from Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) and Asia. Women from around the world are welcome to participate, with the understanding the material is contextualized towards Pacific Island SIDS and Southeast Asia. Those who have strong interests in the course or in working in the Pacific are also encouraged to apply. The program aims to equip women with lifelong skills to develop a more inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Plan contextualized to the needs of their communities and countries.

The programme is being conducted with the financial support of the Government and the People of Japan.


Application Process 

To apply for this programme, you will need to complete the below steps: 

  1. Create a SurveyMonkey account (if you do not have one already) 

  1. Complete the Eligibility Criteria Survey 

  1. Start, complete and Submit your Application Form 


Eligibility Criteria 

Participants will be selected through an open call for applications based on specific criteria including:  

  • Adult (18 years old and over) Female applicants will receive priority,

  • Geographical representation in the Pacific and Asia regions,

  • Invested interest in Disaster Risk Reduction,

  • Strong desire to make a difference in their society,

  • Stable internet connectivity,

  • Good command of the English language (oral and written), and

  • A commitment of 2-4 hours per week to complete this 10-week course.

The programme will be delivered in the English language. The programme will be fully carried out online due to COVID health measures, incorporating asynchronous on-demand courses and series of webinars delivered by expert facilitators on our online platforms.
